Where Dreams Become Brews

Gate Stones

Hey gang! Got a quick item post for you today. I wanted an item that  would let one of my characters have a sort of mobile laboratory (they’re a Medic Alchemist with a mad scientist streak) and it sort of evolved into something a bit more complex. Think Mordenkainen’s Magnificent Mansion but an item and way smaller.

Gate Stones

Wonderous item, rarity varies

This cloth bag holds 5 smooth stones, each engraved with runes that faintly glow. There are four varieties of gate stones known to exist, each with a different aesthetic, room size, and level of security. You can take 1 minute to arrange the stones in the shape of a doorway on a relatively flat vertical surface, which the stones magically adhere to almost magnetically.

After setting up the stones and speaking the command word, a door magically appears in the doorway. Speaking the command word again as an action will dispel the doorway and any creature within the room is expelled into the nearest open space near the entrance. The door of all gate stones except for the Royal’s Refuge can be damaged and broken. Use the Statistics for Objects section of the Dungeon Master’s Guide on page 246 to determine their AC and hit points. If a door is damaged or broken, the stones must be inactive for 8 hours, in which the door will magically repair itself.

Through the door is an extradimensional chamber, the size and aesthetic of which is determined by the rarity. The room can be decorated and furnished in any way you would a normal room as long as the dimension of the room is not altered. The room is immune to all but the most minor cosmetic damage.

Pauper’s Pantry (Uncommon) The stones are simple polished rock with basic runes carved into their surface. When used, they produce an unremarkable wooden door with a bronze handle. The room is 10 feet by 10 feet with a rough and dingy interior, much like a cellar or dungeon. Any creature can pass through the door unimpeded.

Commoner’s Cabin (Rare) The stones are polished green crystal with flowing golden runes. When used, they produce a sturdy wooden door reinforced with iron banding and an iron handle. The room is 20 feet by 20 feet with a simple yet charming interior, akin to an inn or tavern. The door can be opened freely by whoever set up the stones or any creature they designate. Otherwise it is locked, but it can be picked (DC 15) and it can be affected by the Knock spell or similar magic.

Baron’s Bastion (Very Rare) The stones are a smooth ruby with angular black runes. When used, they produce a door of heavy iron plating with a steel handle. The room is 30 feet by 30 feet with an elegant and lavish interior, similar to a noble’s manor. The door can be opened freely by whoever set up the stones or any creature they designate. Otherwise it is locked, but it can be picked (DC 20) and it can be affected by the Knock spell or similar magic.

Royal’s Refuge (Legendary) The stones are a polished sapphire with elegant silver runes. When used, they produce a solid wall of polished adamantine with only the barest outline of a door and no visible handle. The room is 40 feet by 40 feet with an opulent and imperial interior, comparable to a castle hall. The door can be opened freely only by whoever set up the stones or any creature they designate. It cannot be picked and is immune to magic that can open doors.
